Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Unemployment, particularly among youth, is one of the key drivers of instability and insecurity in many developing countries, including Nigeria. In Jalingo LGA, Taraba State, the high rate of youth unemployment has contributed significantly to rising incidents of youth restiveness, which in turn poses a threat to national security (Adeyemi & Hassan, 2024; Muhammad et al., 2023). Restive youths, frustrated by their inability to secure stable employment, often resort to criminal activities such as protests, armed robberies, and violent confrontations. This phenomenon has been exacerbated by a lack of social and economic opportunities, leading to the proliferation of extremist ideologies among marginalized youth (Bello & Garba, 2023). Unemployment-driven youth restiveness is not only a local challenge but also a national security concern, as it fuels insurgencies and other violent movements that destabilize regions and hamper economic development (Dantata et al., 2023). This study explores the connection between youth unemployment and national security, with a particular focus on how restiveness manifests in Jalingo LGA.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Youth unemployment in Jalingo LGA has become a major issue, contributing to growing youth restiveness, which is a threat to national security. Despite the federal and state government's efforts to reduce unemployment through various programs, there has been little empirical research on the direct impact of unemployment on youth behavior and national security in Jalingo LGA. The rising cases of unrest, violence, and youth engagement in criminal activities in the region point to a significant link between unemployment and insecurity (Umar & Sulaimon, 2024). This study seeks to assess the extent to which unemployment contributes to national security threats in Jalingo LGA, and it will examine the mechanisms through which youth restiveness emerges and escalates into larger security concerns.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
1.4 Research Questions
1.5 Research Hypotheses
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it will provide insights into the direct link between youth unemployment and national security concerns, particularly youth restiveness. The research will inform policymakers, local government officials, and security agencies about the root causes of unrest in Jalingo LGA. By addressing the underlying socio-economic factors that fuel youth violence, the study will contribute to more effective strategies for preventing security threats and promoting sustainable peace in the region.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study focuses on youth unemployment and its impact on national security in Jalingo LGA, Taraba State. It will specifically examine the role of youth restiveness in exacerbating security challenges. The study is limited to this region and will not cover other LGAs or states.
